Patient Blood Management

Sportklinik Hellersen is part of the German and European Patient Blood Management Network and has been certified with the silver award for its outstanding performance in implementing the measures.

What is Patient Blood Management?

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is an advanced medical concept that aims to strengthen the body's own blood reserves and improve patient safety. The early diagnosis and treatment of pre-operative anaemia, the minimization of blood loss during surgical procedures and the targeted and gentle use of blood reserves are central to this. These measures reduce the risk of blood transfusions and the associated health risks for patients.

Advantages of patient blood management

  • Strengthening the body's own blood reserves: Measures such as autologous blood donation and treatment of preoperative anemia increase the patient's natural blood reserves.
  • Reduction of blood loss: Optimized surgical techniques and preoperative preparations minimize blood loss during surgery.
  • Minimizing the risk of blood transfusions: Targeted measures reduce the need for outside blood transfusions.
  • Improved patient safety: fewer transfusions mean a lower risk of transfusion-related complications and infections.
  • Faster recovery: Patients recover more quickly from operations as fewer complications and transfusions occur.
  • Reduction of health risks: Avoidance of transfusion-associated risks such as infections and immunologic reactions.
  • Optimized treatment standards: Adherence to the latest medical standards improves the overall quality of patient care.

The PBM network

The network offers clinics at all levels of care a platform for cooperation and has already won over more than 200 clinics in Germany for its goals. At the same time, the European PBM network is playing an increasingly important role in promoting these standards at European level.
